J's thoughts on "How I Became Stupid"

Hey girls,

seems that the comment function still doesn't work for everyone (Do you have problems too? Please let me know!) And so I got an e-mail from lovely J from Singapore about our first book and a recommendation for our reading list too. Here we go …

--

I have finished reading How To Be Stupid, although I have to admit I didn't love it (don't hate me!!). It was amusing in places but I found the characters very annoying and I didn't feel he really learnt anything. I hated that girl he met at the end! I think it didn't help that I was reading Steppenwolf at the same time, which also has the main character of a depressed intellectual trying to be happy, but is a much more complex and interesting read that overshadowed this one. So, sorry to be negative about a book you love. I know other people have already said they loved it too so it's probably just me. I have spent ages trying to decide on a 'Favourite' to suggest and it's so hard! I think I've decided now though. It's an autobiographical novel by Homer Hickham called Rocket Boys (also published as October Sky). It's about a group of boys learning how to be rocket scientists, which doesn't sound like my kind of thing but it's bizarrely involving and uplifting. And you learn how to make rockets.

Dear J, without revealing too much about my own thoughts on "How I Became Stupid" … I don't see it in the same way anymore as I used to when I was younger and fell in love with it. Things change.

But for this exact reason I started this blog … to exchange our thoughts on books. No matter if we love them, hate them, or if we are indifferent. But to be honest, beside Steppenwolf this little number didn't stand a chance. Fair enough. I'm looking forward to read your book very soon but before we have D's book on our list which will be revealed a bit later in June.

I hope this post will find all of you girls in good spirits. Enjoy the weekend and Happy International Children's Day!

New book to read …

Well girls, May is coming to an end and I actually have no idea who of you is reading the book. ;o) I do but I haven't finished yet. Looks like the first idea of one book a month was a bit too ambitious. But as it should be fun … who cares?!? I will finish and write my blog post for you to read, as promised.

In other news: we have a new book already waiting in the pipeline as I got an e-mail from Toronto from our lovely D. requesting the next read. Thanks! Let me know if you wanna have it revealed already or if I should wait for a bit longer.

I have to admit that you all but one have been very lazy about sending me your favourite (or at least one of your favourite) books to put them on our reading list hence there is no reading list posted yet! If we ever want to have one … send me the titles by e-mail or post them here in the comment section. Otherwise I will just go on talking to myself and you'll have to put up with whatever crosses my mind. ;o)

Keep on reading.

The comment feature …

… should work now. :o) In the end it has been easier than expected.

Happy commenting!

And now there is no excuse anymore … post your fav books for the reading list!

What's your reading position?

I tried them all. :o)

And in other news: I still couldn't figure out why you can't post comments when you don't have a blog on blogger yourself. Sorry! So please send me your fav books by e-mail for now. I'm still waiting!!! Or start your own blog and post that way. ;oP
I still try to fix it and I am open to ideas from others. Probably by mail for now. Ha ha. Have been a bit busy over the last 2 weeks but will try my best be the end of next one (which starts in about one hour ;o). Until then I hope you are all busy reading about Antoine.

Time to reveal the first book!

You all know that I kind of inhale books and that's why my list of favourites is kind of long. It hasn't been really easy to decide which one I would like you all to read. For different reasons I chose a book from a french author called Martin Page. It isn't very long and entertaining. So I hope you all will enjoy reading it.

And here it is … tada. ;o)

"How I Became Stupid" by Martin Page

Or if you are able and want to read the original "Comment Je suis Denevu Stupide" and for all who might want to read it in German "Antoine oder die Idiotie". I didn't check for other languages. But as far as I know you can also get it as eBook.

Enjoy the book and see you back here soon.
